Love & Music

The first time Sandol Astrausky (left) and Rory MacLeod (right) met, as recalled years later.

Rory MacLeod: We met at a “First Night”… I don’t know if I’d met you before that I might have–

Sandol Astrausky: I think I knew of you. Providence is a really small community, and if you’re a musician of any genre, you kind of know names and things like that. Yeah it was a “First Night” in Providence–

RM: I mostly played tuba I think. Didn’t I? I played bass and tuba.

SA: Did we do the radio thing?

RM: Yeah. That was the first. He wanted to do the Blue Bug radio show only it wasn’t the Blue Bug show…They broadcasted it live. It ended up being a regular thing on WHJJ.

SA:  So you played–

RM: I was in the pit band. I played bass and at one point I played tuba.

SA: We kind of met during that–

RM: During the rehearsal–

SA: But we didn’t see each other for a long time after that.

RM: At one point, once we started going together, she wanted to be in a wedding band to make a lot of money. We always wanted to make a lot of money, but we’re not very good at it.

SA: I thought let’s put together a wedding band and go play on Martha’s Vineyard because we weren’t making any money just playing in bars over here. So we did. We got together a band–

RM: We had to try to do a variety of Americana music. And we called ourselves the Hatfield McCoy trio, thinking that would be an ironic name for a wedding band. We eventually ended up with five members and became the world’s largest trio. I don’t know if you know this but you don’t change the name of your band–

SA: It’s like a ship name–

RM: No matter what. It’s a kiss of death.
