Map of Rhode Island

This map hangs on the wall opposite the doorway to Sandol Astrausky and Rory MacLeod’s living room. MacLeod said it has been in his family for generations, passed down from one of his first relatives in the state. MacLeod moved the white sofa to show their property in the southern corner of the map. Using a magnifying glass, he followed the Wood River, the same river that their 9.9 acre property backs up to. It’s the same Wood River that they like to kayak up and down and that their dog, Kipp, splashes in when they let him roam the property.

Dana Richie: When did y’all move here?

Rory MacLeod: 2012–

DR: 2012?

RM: We actually didn’t own property until then.

DR: And you were in Providence before that?

RM: No. We were in South County in a place called Perryville which was a really cool spot. That’s where we first started living together. And the community there. There’s a bunch of people who were in our age group.

DR: Where are you guys from originally?

RM: I grew up here.

DR: Ok ok that makes sense.

RM: Sandol grew up pretty much in the South coast of Connecticut. West Haven. No East Haven.
